Veterans Benefits

The Veterans Administration does not generally provide payment for funeral services. There are occasions which a veteran may qualify for partial reimbursement of funeral expenses. You should contact your local Veterans Administration office for these requirements.

All honorably discharged veterans are eligible for the following benefits:

  • A United States Flag presented to the next of kin of the Veteran.
  • Full casket or urn burial in a National Cemetery. A casket burial or placement of cremated remains in a National Cemetery includes the interment space, burial liner if required, opening & closing, and a memorial for the veteran. A spouse of a Veteran is also eligible for interment with the Veteran in a National Cemetery. At the current time there are two National Cemeteries in Southern California. Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego and Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside. At the current time Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery is only accepting cremated remains placements. There are also plans being developed for a Veterans Cemetery at Miramar MCAS in San Diego County.
  • Military honors are available but are provided at the discretion of each branch within the military. The staff at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary will assist you in securing military honors.
  • A Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is an engraved paper certificate, signed by the current President, to honor the memory of honorably discharged deceased veterans. Application may be made at any VA regional office, by mail or online. Information may be found online at www.cem.va.gov/.

In order to receive benefits a copy of the veterans DD214 (discharge papers) is generally required. If a copy is not on hand assistance is available in securing a copy at www.vetrecs.archives.gov.
