Alice Kay
Habeger
July 17, 1950 – May 5, 2024
Alice Habeger passed away peacefully at home on Sunday May 5 with her husband Bill, sister Carolyn, and son Matt at her side. She had been quietly battling a slow-moving form of cancer and Alzheimer's...likely for a number of years before being diagnosed last November and withdrawing from social activities. Alice was preceded in death by her parents and sister Margie Allen Sokolnicki. Alice is survived by husband Bill, son Matt and his wife Alison, grandson Peter, and sister Carolyn Allen Renteria and her husband Ernest Renteria of Albuquerque NM.
Alice was born on July 17, 1950 in Lordsburg, New Mexico to Richard and Opal Allen. Alice spent her childhood exploring the southwest – visiting relatives in Texas and movie shoots across Arizona and New Mexico. Alice's family owned a movie theater and later a drive-in movie theater where she worked while growing up. At Lordsburg High School Alice was very active as a majorette and a member of numerous organizations.
After high school, Alice moved to southern California where she attended UC Riverside and graduated with a degree in sociology. She later entered the insurance industry as a claims adjuster working from the Ventura office for American States Insurance Company. Her claims assignments led her to meet Bill at his insurance agency in 1981. Alice and Bill were married in July of 1982 at their home in Camarillo California.
Alice's son Matt was born in October 1983. She loved raising a toddler in Ventura county visiting the beach, the zoo, and many parks. Alice enjoyed traveling by motorhome while Matt was young. The family relocated to San Diego in 1986 for Bill's acquisition of B.H. Gold Insurance Agency.
Grandson Peter was born in 2013 and Alice eagerly accepted the role of grandma. 'Mimi' always made sure to have a toy for Peter in her purse or in his own toybox in the family room. She loved to get into arts and crafts with him and read him a bedtime story.
Alice gained many friends in San Diego, first through B.H. Gold, then through various organizations in Scripps Ranch including Welcome Wagon, Symphony in the Park, and later Jerabek FFO, SRLL, SRHS Baseball Boosters, and many others. Alice continued to be involved with countless charities throughout her life including Oncology & Kids, Casa de Amparo, Father Joe's Village, American Cancer Society, Huntington's Disease Society, MS Society, Nice Guys, SD Police Foundation, and the SD Food Bank.
Volunteering to help fill vacancies at B.H. Gold, as a room parent, field trip chaperone, at Wangenheim Middle & Jerabek Elementary schools, or team mom for Matt's little league teams kept Alice busy. Through this work Alice met some of her lifelong friends all of whom she loved a great deal. She always looked forward to bunco, book club, or countless birthday brunches shared throughout the years.
Alice loved being the center of attention as evidenced by her bright smile - even as recently as when she was fitted for a wheelchair just days before she passed. Alice learned to always look her best from her mother and grandmother. Whether she was getting up early, preparing for bunco, attending a sporting event, or dinner out with Bill, she was always looking good with her hair, makeup and jewelry perfectly matching her outfit. When packing for trips, she was meticulous about laying out her outfits and accessories and coordinating with Bill. No matter where she went, Alice looked her best.
She loved spending days in her garden, weeding and checking her flowers. She was very crafty, making decorations for the holidays or adding succulents and flower arrangements around the house. She was always ready to fix something around the house or a toy for Peter with her trusted superglue! She was a Home Goods and Hallmark expert, finding just the right pieces for the house or gifts and cards for friends and family. She loved displaying pictures throughout the house. The table at her desk, kitchen, and family room were always arranged with family pictures she was proud to display.
Alice loved the pomp and circumstance of all sporting events, especially bowl games and playoffs. She became an avid sports fan as time went by attending Padre games as a season ticket holder since 1986. Alice fell in love with baseball while Matt played for Scripps Ranch High School from 1998-2002. Later, she dedicated more time to the Padres, clocking 83 Padre games across Petco Park, Dodger Stadium, and San Francisco's AT&T Park in 2016.
Bill and Alice became adoptive Aztec fans attending SDSU basketball games and could be seen at nearly every home game seated close to some of their nearest friends. Alice transitioned her allegiance from baseball to basketball, ultimately opining that baseball was less exciting.
Traveling brought excitement to Alice as she explored the world with her family, especially by cruise. Bill and Alice enjoyed their 31st cruise in September 2023 as a celebration of their 42nd wedding anniversary.
