Obituary

Barbara Gillingham 75, passed away March 15 th ,2022 at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, CA. Barbara was born November 14, 1946 in Ironwood, Michigan, daughter of the late John and Ileana Babich.

Barbara graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh with a major in English and a minor in music. Music has always been her passion, as she loved to sing and play the piano.  It was at the University of Wisconsin that she met her husband, Gary Gillingham. On July 4 th , 1970 they married and started their life's adventure together. They moved from Oshkosh to Chicago, then Las Vegas, before finally settling in San Diego, CA where they spent the last 37 years.

Barbara was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Poway, CA and taught religious education when her daughter was of school age. She completed her working career in 2011 when she retired from the Poway Unified School District. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling to different vineyards throughout California, taking cruises south of the border, spending summers in their Wisconsin home, and visiting friends and family throughout the United States.

Barbara was known for being a great friend, a loving wife, and a wonderful mother.  She always had a way of making those around her feel valued. She loved her family and friends with all her heart and made the most out of every day she had on this earth.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father John in 1964, her brother John Paul in 1987, her mother's long-time companion Jim in 1997, and her mother Ileana in 2009.  Barbara is survived by her husband Gary Gillingham of Poway, CA and daughter Lesley (Justin) Frohnhoefer of Castle Rock, CO.

Barbara's viewing will be held at Poway Bernardo Mortuary on April 27 th from 4-8pm. Her funeral mass will be held at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Poway, CA on April 28 th at 10:00am. Lastly, her burial will take place at Miramar National Cemetery on April 29 th at 1:30pm. We invite all friends and family to attend all services. Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association, St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, or the family, who will choose from the many worthy causes Barbara believed in and supported.
