Bernie was born 8/20/1927 in Baghdad Iraq. He was educated by American Jesuits. At the age of 19, Bernie immigrated in 1946 from Baghdad with the clothes on his back and made the American dream his reality. His journey included traveling from Baghdad to Palestine to catch a ship traveling to New York City. Fall 1946 saw Bernie enroll at Fordham University as a freshman majoring in chemistry, ultimately graduating and being employed by Kraft General Foods as a Food Chemist. He advanced rapidly to become a Research Manager and was stationed Woburn, MA, Dover, DE, Tarrytown, NY, Tokyo, Japan, and Honolulu, HI. He retired from Kraft General Foods in 1987 in Rancho Bernardo, CA. Bernie enjoyed sports especially baseball, tennis, and ping pong and continued playing tennis into his late 80's. Bernie, who had a love for music, adopted Frank Sinatra's "My Way" as his signature song and sang it at many festive occasions during his life.

Bernie was described recently by Fr. Joe McShane, President of Fordham University:

"I have always believed (and continue to believe) that Bernie is one of Fordham's great saints.  He has lived a life of generous service to God, the Church, and the University.  (And he has always done all he has done with disarming humility.)

Please tell him that I believe that he is a true son of Saint Ignatius who has lived our Father's Prayer for Generosity:

"Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous.

Teach me to serve you as You Deserve.

To give and not to count the cost.

To fight and not to heed the wounds.

To toil and not to seek for rest.

To labor and not to ask for any reward save that of knowing I do Your will."

Since he has lived that prayer, he will be welcomed to the Kingdom with great joy by the Lord whom he has served all his life."

A special thank you to the people at Campa de las Campanas for their loving care and support during his final days.
