Brian Edward May
November 13, 1944 – March 5, 2020
Brian passed away with family by his side on March 5, 2020. Born on November 13 th , 1944, Brian spent his childhood years in Seattle, Washington with his "parents" Eva "Nana," Lillian and Kelly Bywater and brother Kevin. He got in to his fair share of mischief with long-time pal and brother-in-heart, Allen Smith.
Brian enlisted in the US Navy in 1965, training as a Fire Control Technician. Based out of San Diego, Brian met his future wife, Jennifer Thiss, in 1969, although they would not start dating until 1975. During the Vietnam War, he served onboard the USS Lynde McCormick from November 1967 to May 1972, earning numerous awards and commendations. His active military service ended in 1972, but Brian continued in the Navy Reserve for an additional 15 years, retiring in 1987 at the rank of Chief.
After his active service, Brian took a job at Hewlett-Packard, San Diego, as an Electrical Technician, where he spent his 24 year career, retiring in 1996. In August of 1977, Brian and Jenny married, blending their families from former relationships: Brian's two daughters Mariea and Cheryl, and Jenny's son, Jason. Three years later, the pair welcomed Brian Randall into their family.
Brian enjoyed camping, fishing and was a self-proclaimed "Trekkie," enjoying all things Star Trek and Star Wars . After retiring, he spent his time tending their rose and fruit tree gardens, playing with their Golden Retriever, Taz, catching up on all of his favorite SciFi shows and movies, and sleeping…plenty of sleeping. Brian had a dry sense of humor and propensity for sarcasm, often answering the phone with "Is this the person to whom I'm speaking?" Of late, his preferred phone greeting was "Moshi moshi," (Japanese, roughly translated "speaking, speaking") which was equally off-balancing to many.
Brian is survived by his wife, Jenny, their three children and their families: Mariea & Paul Place, granddaughter Sabrina; Cheryl & Brian Kennedy, granddaughter Sierra and grandson Zach; Jason & Alicia May, granddaughters Breonna and Kendra; his brother Kevin Bywater and his wife Jaye; and brother-in-heart Al Smith and his wife Vicky. He is predeceased by his son Brian Randall and his "parents" Eva, Lillian and Kelly Bywater.
A Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 3pm at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary: 13243 Poway Rd, Poway, CA 92064. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project.
