Obituary

Candy passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022, after a long struggle with dementia.  While this devastating illness was difficult to experience, it did not define Candy's wonderful life full of love for family and friends, traveling adventures, and the joy of a good book, puzzle, movie, or sweet treat.

Candy was born on December 8, 1948 in Long Beach, California and soon after moved to San Diego with her parents.  She graduated from Helix High in 1966, received her BA at U.C. Riverside in Anthropology, followed by an MA in Art History from San Diego State.  Candy was employed at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich as an Art Editor for seven years before leaving the profession to pursue a teaching credential.  In 1990, she began her teaching career in Poway Unified School District and spent the next twenty years inspiring primary age students at Rolling Hills Elementary.  Her passion for art, literature, music, and hands-on experiences brought her classroom to life.  She enjoyed every moment with her many students and took great pride in teaching them about the Beatles, Vermeer, Puffins, poetry, and so much more.  In addition, she established a strong network of fellow educators and maintained a special friendship with them throughout the remainder of her life.

Candy loved to travel.  This passion began when she took a yearlong trip around the world at age 14. She shared her joy of experiencing new cultures and places with her family, long-time friends, and work colleagues.  Her love of music, art, and literature were shared with her granddaughters Emery and Abby, who brought great joy to her life.  Candy will be remembered as the person who welcomed you into her home for a cup of tea and a biscuit or a movie with subtitles or a chocolate truffle, and enjoyed visiting neighborhood friends to discuss the day's events.

Candy is survived by her loving son, Colin Young, who assured his mom was loved, cared for, and secure throughout her life.  That love and care were also provided by her daughter-in-law Kelly Young and granddaughters Emery Young and Abby Young.  Candy would not want to forget her special relationship with "granddog" Jovie, who she loved very much.

Eat a Godiva chocolate in her memory.
