Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Ed Gladney announce his passing on July 9, 2023. Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda, son Chuck (Lauren) Gladney, daughters Christine Gladney and Allison (Steve) Bolin, brothers James and Robert, grandchildren Griffin and Grace, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Dorothy, sister Joyce, and son Patrick.

Ed was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in southern New Jersey. He joined the Navy in 1965 and fell in love with the West Coast when he was ordered to San Diego in 1967.  During his time in the Navy, Ed worked as an electronics technician at NAS Miramar (now MCAS Miramar). Later, he attended University of California, San Diego and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in two majors: Applied Physics and Information Science and Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences. He started his career as an engineer at Control Data and later moved to Loral Instrumentation, serving as Business Development Director and later as a Vice President.

Ed developed a passion for woodworking and was one of the original members of the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association, later serving as President of the association for 6 years. Over the past 26 years, Ed was involved with the SDFWA's Design in Wood competition at the San Diego County Fair and served as the coordinator of the competition for the last 8 years. Prior to his work with the DIW competition, Ed handcrafted numerous Christmas decorations, toys, children's chairs, stools, and other custom furniture over the years. Many of these beloved items are still used and cherished today.

Ed was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was loved by friends and family for his gentleness, compassion, and sense of humor. His engineering mind could tackle any project with creativity, talent, and precision. Ed loved spending time with his children:fishing off the OB pier, sailing on the bay, boogie boarding at the beach, and many, many camping trips! He could often be found in his workshop working on one of his many creations, often under the watchful eye of curious kids or visiting woodworkers. He is forever in our hearts and we will miss him every day.

A funeral service with military honors will be held at a later date.
