Obituary

Derek Kasey Shumate, 29, passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2018 while on a fishing trip in Arizona.  Derek was on a 10-day leave from the U.S. Navy and was spending time with his family at the time of his passing.

He was born on March 31, 1989 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  As a youth, Derek grew up in Rancho Penasquitos, attended school at Sundance Elementary School, Mesa Verde Middle School and graduated from Westview High School in 2007. After high school, Derek's free spirit took him to Arizona where he spent several years before joining the United States Navy. At the time of his death, Derek was a Seaman assigned to the USS Ramage DDG61 stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.

Derek was a devoted son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend and cherished the relationships he had with his fellow brothers on the USS Ramage. His positive attitude and views on life were among his greatest assets and he brought joy to the lives of everyone who knew and loved him. His interests included hiking, fishing, camping, surfing and he had great respect and love for nature and the outdoors.

Derek is survived by his loving parents David (Randy) Shumate, Donna and David Garcia; brother, Craig and his wife Jaime; niece, Emery; nephew, Cooper;  grandparents, Billy Ann Hutchins, Donald and Marie Shumate and Petra Garcia; aunts, uncles, cousins and many close and loving friends.
