Donald "Duke"
Daley
May 15, 1930 – September 18, 2020
Donald "Duke" Daley died peacefully on September 18, 2020, after celebrating his 90th birthday earlier this year. He was born on May 15, 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was the youngest of four children. His three sisters preceded him in death. Duke was also preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia (2002), and his second wife, Colleen (2016).
Shortly after graduating from high schoool, Duke enlisted in the United States Air Force. After bootcamp, he was selected to serve in Europe. He was excited to find out he would travel across the Atlantic Ocean in "luxury" via a troop transport ship. It was in the winter (very rough seas), and he had the company of a few thousand other seasick servicemen crossing the Atlantic Ocean. After receiving an honorable discharge, Duke moved back to Pittsburgh and was hired by the Todd Corporation, a company that was eventually acquired by Burroughs Paper Products. He also married Patricia Brady of Monongahela, PA. Duke is one of the few who can say he worked for one organization his entire career.
After working for a few years in Pittsburgh, Duke was promoted and moved to Rochester, NY. A few years later he was promoted again, and moved with his family to Los Angeles, CA. Duke worked 35 years for the Burroughs Corporation, before retiring in 1993, and relocating to Port Angeles, Washington. He married Colleen Gillespie in Port Angeles. After his wife passed away in 2016, he decided to move closer to family, and relocated to San Diego, California. Duke was diagnosed with Dementia in 2016, and kept his mind active by engaging in conversations about any topics with his family and friends, and keeping up with all of his favorite sports teams.
He is survived by his son Kevin (and Tracey) of San Diego, and his daughter Colleen (and Larry) of Salt Lake City, UT. Other surviving family members include eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Committal Service with Military Funeral Honors will be conducted on Friday, October 30, 2020, 1030 in the morning at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Duke's honor to the Dementia Society of America, a 501(c) nonprofit charity serving the nation for all causes of Dementia @DementiaSociety.org
