Donald James
Janiuk
November 25, 1948 – May 25, 2025
Donald James Janiuk, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated optometrist, passed away peacefully on May 25th, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and community. Born on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, to Stanley and Anne Janiuk, Don moved to Palm Springs, California, in 1958, where he spent his formative years.
A proud graduate of Palm Springs High School, Class of 1966, Don met the love of his life, Vivian Price, when they were both just 16 years old. Their high school romance blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and the two were married on May 22, 1971. Don pursued his professional calling at the Southern California College of Optometry in Los Angeles, graduating with the Class of 1972.
In 1973, Don and Vivian moved to Poway, where he opened his optometry practice in the Carriage Center on October 4. For nearly 50 years, Don served generations of families with dedication and care. He was an esteemed Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD), serving at times as both President and Treasurer, was a founding member of the Poway Kiwanis Club and also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Outside of work, Don was known for his passion for slow-pitch softball, his love of travel—especially ski vacations—and his joy in working around the house and yard with rock music blaring in the background. His hands were always busy, his heart always full, and his sense of humor ever-present.
Don is survived by his devoted wife, Vivian, and their three children: Paul Janiuk (wife Margarita), Angela Janiuk (Mark), and Alison Tyler. He was a proud grandfather to Silas Tyler. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Kern of Santa Rosa Valley, and her three children: Mark Bayliss, Scott Bayliss (wife Valma), and Laura Schwarz (husband Todd), along with her five grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 13, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, 13734 Twin Peaks Road, Poway, CA 92064.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Don's memory to your local Humane Society—an organization close to his heart.
Don's warm spirit, tireless dedication, and joyful presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
