Doris Jean
Pina
June 7, 1945 – October 7, 2020
Doris Jean Piña, 75, of Poway, California went to be with the Lord on October 7, 2020, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Doris was born on June 7, 1945 to Mary Ellen Mishler and George Theodore Metroyanis in Gary, Indiana. In 1976, she met José Piña, and they wed in 1978, going on to have two children, Michelle and Melissa.
Doris was a very enthusiastic, encouraging person who never gave up on life's destiny or with those she cared for and loved. She had multiple interests and was very "street smart". When it came to things she believed in and had a passion for, such as dancing from age 4 up to 28 when she was selected as a San Francisco Gold Digger (tap dance), artwork, and playing or listening to music, it always brought her joy. No matter what, the one thing in her life that had sustained her was her walk with the Lord. She never stopped praying for her family and always kept learning and sharing the wonder and power of God with others.
Doris had a diversified career in areas such as accounting, secretarial, administrative, sales, English teacher, realtor, entrepreneur as a restaurant owner/caterer, energy technology, network marketer, travel consultant, and the author of two books. She also was a photographer/videographer and Youtube promoter, took floral design and language courses, Band Mom at Mt. Carmel High School, and enjoyed attending music concerts, marching band field shows, and banquets. Doris served with the Women's Dance Group and chaperoned competitions, and held offices with the AHEPA Maids of Athena as President, District Governor, and National Secretary. She also sang in the Junior Choir and played the organ for the choir and weddings, and organized a Gary Greek Kids Reunion page on Facebook to reconnect with people she grew up with after 40+ years. Doris was always consumed in doing something productive, such as being the event organizer for family celebrations, church events, Greek sororities, fundraisers, charities and starting up new businesses.
Her travels included visiting over 100 US cities, 10 countries, and over 50 international cities. After living in Bloomington, Indiana at Indiana University, she resided in 7 major cities including Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas and Mexico City, where she met José, her true love, husband and soul mate. Doris valued the many relationships she made with family, friends and acquaintances from all over the world.
The best job she had was being a mother and a grandmother. Having beautiful grandchildren was the icing on her cake. How she loved those munchkins! Every stage was a new adventure and her saying was, "I'm new at this!". She said that it was like going "back to the future" in a funny sort of way since things had changed so much in 30 years when her kids were babies. It brought life back into the family – the laughter, the memories, and the LOVE that was instant and forever. Holding them, playing with them, teaching them, feeding them - all of this to her was the complete package!
Being the family photographer, photos and movies were never scarce and helping others was her mission no matter what she was involved with. It was always a gift for her to give to others that gave her the most gratification. She loved to create and though some of her dreams didn't come to pass, she experienced so much more seeing her daughters excel in their passions. Doris was so thankful for all that God had blessed her with.
Doris is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband, José Piña; her daughters Michelle Hayashi and Melissa Palumbo; her grandchildren, Kainoa Hayashi, Nohea Hayashi and Emmanuel Scott and her siblings, Patti Coveris, Sonia Iracleanos, Tom Metroyanis and Frank Metroyanis.
