Douglass William
Mccracken
September 23, 1975 – February 18, 2026
Known for his distinctive, contagious laugh and his nonjudgmental kindness, Douglass William McCracken, 50, of San Diego, California, passed away on February 18, 2026, at 11:10 a.m., leaving an ache in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Born on September 23, 1975, in San Jose, California, Doug was the cherished first grandchild, eagerly awaited by his family, who still fondly remember pressing their noses to the hospital nursery window to catch a glimpse of him, bald head and all. He was born to Charles W. McCracken and Rose Ann Wilson McCracken.
After his three-month shots, Doug and his mother traveled to Africa to join his father. He spent his first year there surrounded by love from family friends and his beloved dog, Petho. While in Africa, he was baptized into the Catholic faith, a foundation that guided him throughout his life. The family later lived in Guatemala, from where Doug returned home with an adorable Spanish accent, as well as in Utah and Florida, always eventually returning to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Doug attended De La Salle High School, where he formed lifelong friendships. As a young boy, he loved playing soccer and baseball, with his family proudly cheering him on. Even then, his gravelly voice and mile-a-minute storytelling made him unforgettable.
Doug spent much of his younger years battling addiction. Through this hardship, he learned perseverance, humility, and how to stand back up when life knocks you down. After achieving 12 years of sobriety, he transformed his pain into purpose. What once threatened to break him became the foundation of his strength. He became deeply committed to helping others in recovery, serving as a sponsor and guiding many with compassion and honesty and reminding them that no one is beyond redemption.
He worked as a highly respected Group Facilitator in addiction treatment services at Casa Palmera and Amity San Diego for several years—a role that was more than employment; it was a calling. The work was deeply meaningful to him because he wanted to guide others, make them feel comfortable, and share his story so no one would feel alone in theirs. Recently, Doug made the decision to return to school to pursue becoming a Clinical Therapist, determined to expand his ability to help even more people.
In October, Doug suffered a stroke and faced yet another battle with courage. In his final months, he focused on what mattered most: faith, family, and time with those he loved.
Doug shared more than ten loving years with his fiance/domestic partner, Patty Cahill, the love of his life and greatest blessing. Together they built a life filled with laughter, resilience, and devotion, along with their beloved cat, Meow Meow. Patty was his safe place and his greatest joy.
As a loyal sports fan, Doug proudly supported the Dallas Cowboys and the San Diego Padres. Whether watching a game, sharing stories, or laughing until everyone else joined in, he brought warmth into every room.
Doug is survived by his fiance, Patty Cahill; his uncles Curt Wilson, Steve Wilson, and Rudy Wilson; and his aunt, Bea Wilson Kollinzas; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Bobby Cahill, Eddie Cahill, John Cahill, Cathy Cahill, and DeeDee Cahill; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and countless friends and members of the recovery community whose lives he forever changed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. McCracken and Rose Ann Wilson McCracken, and his mother-in-law, Olga Cahill.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 23, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Poway Bernardo Mortuary, 13243 Poway Road, Poway, California 92064. Family and friends are invited to gather, pay their respects, and participate in a group rosary in Doug's honor.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 24, at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8200 Gold Coast Drive, San Diego, California 92126. A remembrance gathering will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the GoFundMe established by the family support Patty as she navigates this transition. Also, if you would like to donate to your local chapter of AA in honor of Doug. https://aasandiego.org/contribute/
Doug will be remembered for the light he brought with him everywhere, his unwavering belief in second chances, and the way he made every person feel seen and valued. His legacy lives on in the lives he helped lift and in the hope he restored to so many.
As Doug would often say, "here's to living the dream - we don't have to do this, we get to do this."
