Eugene Gerald
Plantier Jr.
April 29, 1943 – November 18, 2022
Eugene G. Plantier (Gene), age 79, passed away on November 18, 2022 in Poway, California, very soon after discovering he had advanced cancer. He was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who will be greatly missed.
Gene was born on April 29, 1943 in Nashua, New Hampshire, the first and only child of Eugene and Merilda Plantier. Sadly, his father was killed in World War II when he was just an infant. Gene attended Alvirne High School in Hudson, New Hampshire, where he competed in gymnastics events on the parallel bars, tumbling, and side-horse.
As a young man, Gene served in the United States Navy and was awarded a Purple Heart during the Vietnam War. After being discharged from the military, Gene returned to Vietnam as a contractor before moving to San Diego, California and then to nearby Poway in 1978, where he raised his sons. Gene was an intelligent, hard-working man who forged a successful career as a business leader and consultant in the electronics and computer industries.
Gene married his second wife, Darlene, in Poway on October 24, 1998. The couple belonged to Stoneridge Country Club for ten years, before moving in retirement to Sun City, Arizona. Gene enjoyed riding horses in his younger days and playing golf with Darlene later in life. He was heartbroken when Darlene, who was stricken with ALS, lost her life in 2020.
Gene had two sons and five grandchildren: Ray and his two children, Kyle and Travis, of Temecula, CA; and Phil and daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and their children, Ryan, Tyler, and Emily, of Poway, CA. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Crystal Cox, his former wife, Elena Plantier, several cousins, and many cherished friends.
Family and friends will honor the lives of Gene and Darlene at Dearborn Memorial Park on Wednesday, December 22, 2022 at 11 am, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ALS Association, Greater San Diego Chapter, 9929 Hibert Street, Ste. A, San Diego, CA 92131.
