Evelyn Louise
Hammock
October 21, 1934 – February 8, 2026
Evelyn Louise Hammock passed away on February 8, 2026, in San Diego, California with her loving family by her side. She was born on October 21, 1934, in Caney, Oklahoma and was raised in Morrill, Nebraska.
It was in Morrill that Evelyn met Don, her husband, at seven years old. Childhood friends and high school sweethearts, their story began early and endured a lifetime.
Evelyn graduated from Morrill High School in 1953, where she was a cheerleader and proudly played the clarinet in the marching band. Music remained a quiet joy throughout her life, as she also enjoyed playing the piano. After Don joined the Navy in 1953, they built a beautiful life together, sharing 68 devoted years of marriage grounded in friendship, loyalty, and love. Evelyn dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family, staying home to raise her two children, Diane and Greg. Being a military wife, she often ran the household by herself while Don was on deployment. Her true calling was the love she gave — steady, selfless, and unconditional. As her family grew, so did her love, as she proudly welcomed her grandchildren and great grandchildren into the world. Evelyn treasured every moment spent with them. She was always there to guide, to comfort, and to help in any way she could. Her family was the center of her world and brought her immense happiness.
Later in her life, Evelyn worked at See's Candies and then spent 20 years at California Thrift and Loan, where she was known for her dedication and reliability.
Evelyn was an avid reader who could finish a book in a single day, especially if it was a romance novel. She enjoyed playing board games with her family, working on jigsaw puzzles, and spending quiet hours creating beautiful pieces of needlepoint and cross-stitch that reflected her patience and care. She always looked forward to her annual trips to Maui, where she found joy and relaxation in the beauty and serenity of the island.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Ila, brother James, sister Sharon and husband, Don. She is survived by her daughter Diane (George), her son Greg (Samantha); her grandchildren Adam (Lauren), Sean, Haley, Ashton, and Chase; her great-grandchildren Patrick and Mila; her brother-in-law Keith (Betty); her sister-in-law Charlotte; and many extended family members and friends who were blessed by her warmth and kindness.
Her legacy lives on in the compassion she showed, the wisdom she shared, and the deep and abiding love she poured into her family and those she had acquaintances with. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Evelyn will be laid to rest, next to her late husband, at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
