Obituary

George Dale Haughton

May 13, 1941 – January 14, 2024

George was born in Flint, Michigan, to Calvin and Ruth Haughton. Known as Jerry, he was the youngest of eight and looked up to his brother and many sisters. Much of his childhood was spent in Berwyn, a suburb of Chicago, where he attended school and had his first jobs, including delivering donuts using his own car with a custom donut rack in the backseat that he built himself.

George enlisted in the Air Force at 18, training in Texas and Mississippi. He was stationed at Empire Air Force Base in Northern Michigan where he served in the 752nd Radar Squadron. In his free time, he tapped maple trees for syrup, furthering his love of all things sweet. In 1963, George and his first wife, Barbara, welcomed their son Stephen into the world. George completed his military service in 1964 and was awarded a good conduct medal.

Following his military career, George pursued his interests in electrical engineering, working for the National Cash Register (NCR) in Dayton, Ohio. While working at NCR, George met his wife Frances, and in 1978 had his second son, David. With the help of friends and family, George and Fran built their first home together in Lake Orion, MI. The opportunity to move to California in 1979 took George and his family to Escondido, where he continued his career in computers and electrical engineering. In 1980 and 1981, George's daughters, Jessica and Sarah, were born.

Throughout his life, George enjoyed many hobbies, including photography, remodeling homes, building furniture, buying and fixing cars, gardening, fishing, and playing games with friends and family. He could fix or build just about anything. Around the house he was often singing or whistling as he embarked on a new project or headed out the door on another trip to Home Depot.

George loved being with his family, and welcomed neighbors, friends, and colleagues into his home. He remained close with Fran's family, having been accepted as a decent pinochle player and welcomed as a brother in her family. In recent years, George enjoyed time with his three grandchildren, who brought him joy and always put a smile on his face.

George is survived by his sister Joyce, his children, Stephen, David, Jessica, and Sarah and his grandchildren, Eden, Mary, and Jules.

We knew him as George, Uncle Jerry, Grandpa, Papa, Dad. He was so loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 11:00am at Community Lutheran Church, 3575 East Valley Parkway, Escondido,
