Helmut Frank
Weiss
October 22, 1943 – September 8, 2021
It is with great sorrow that we share the news that Helmut "Frank" Weiss, 77 has passed away on September 8, 2021, after a lengthy battle with kidney cancer.
Dad sure could tell a great story, and here is his beautiful story:
Frank was born in Indija, Yugoslavia on October 22, 1943. The following year, along with his family he fled near Stuttgart, Germany. He immigrated to The United States when he was 14 years old and spent his younger years in Los Angeles. Frank fell in love with this country and later joined the Army where he served 2 years. Following the Service, he began his long career in law enforcement and served his community as a police officer for the LAPD. It was in LA that he met May while responding to a call and a few years later they married and welcomed their only child, Tiffanie. The couple later moved to The Monterey area where he worked for The Del Rey Oaks Police Department and eventually settled in Salinas, CA. Frank was a natural athlete and whatever he wanted to conquer, he not only did but he mastered it! He played professional soccer for The Los Angeles Kickers and had a brief career as a place kicker for The Washington Redskins. He shared his talents with the community coaching youth soccer at University Park as well as high school soccer at Salinas High School.
Frank loved animals, trivia, crosswords, and was an avid reader. He spent quality time working on Mustangs with his son-in-law and enjoyed trips to the lake with family and friends. He will be remembered most as a talented soccer star, but he was also excellent at basketball, ping pong, tennis, and golf. Later in his life Frank worked at Twin Creeks Golf Course and enjoyed his daily interactions with the locals, while honing his golfing skills in record time. In the years that followed, he shared his passion for soccer with his grandchildren and loved building contraptions to help them train. Even when he was too weak to show them how to do something he would mentally train them to be the best. Beyond the pitch Frank was an incredible self-taught artist. One of his favorites was his painting of the Monterey Warf with a Boat Named, "May". He spent many years in Monterey deep sea fishing with his buddies. He handmade each lure and helped everyone on board that needed it. Frank was a charismatic storyteller with a unique sense of humor. Some of his fondest memories were spending time with his daughter playing his favorite slot machine at Barona. They would laugh for hours and do silly rituals as a joke never taking it too seriously. Frank spent a lot of time with his family in San Diego and was so grateful to all the doctors and nurses at Sharp that cared for him for all those years.
Frank leaves behind Marilyn Weiss, daughter Tiffanie (Weiss) Guerra, her husband Marco, grandchildren Mateo, Christian, Monroe and Rocco, his brother Ernst Weiss and sister Rosemarie Rieger and several nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed, though his family will continue each day looking at life through his eyes and asking, "What color is the moon"?
He joined in Heaven, his Mother Maria Weiss, father, Konrad Weiss, brother Johnny Weiss, sister-in-law Mary Lou Weiss, and brother-in-law Claude Crabb.
We thank everyone for the times they made Frank's life special, and we ask that you keep your fondest memories of him in your hearts. Due to the current situation and everyone's safety, we will not be having any large gatherings at this time. In lieu of flowers, if you would like we are honoring him through his favorite charities St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the SPCA.
