Iue "Lou"
Chung Cho
May 3, 1942 – January 22, 2019
Iue Chung (Lou) Cho (의정) 76 passed away peacefully on January 22, 2019 at Scripps Green Hospital in San Diego, CA. He was born on May 3 (actually the 2nd), 1942 in Seoul, South Korea. He was the oldest child to Kwan Jung (켠중) Cho and Il Woo Chung (정일우).
He was a proud graduate of Kyunggi High School ( 경기 고등학교 ) class of 1960. After graduation, he served in the Korean military before moving to the United States in 1962, originally moving to Kansas City to learn English. He then went on to attend The University of Michigan where he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Cho. They were married in 1965. He graduated from The University of Michigan in 1966 with a degree in Fishery, and went on to obtain his Masters and Doctorate degrees in food science at Michigan State University (1967) and North Carolina State University (1973 under Dr. Harold Swaisgood), respectively.
He moved to St. Louis, MO to work at Ralston Purina / Solae where he worked for 28 years and obtained many patents involving soy protein technology. He retired in 2001 and moved to Moss Creek in Hilton Head Island, SC to spend more time playing his passion of golf. He had many friends throughout his life, helping them with their careers, personal lives, and spirituality. He loved golf, raising his boys and watching them play ice hockey, and enjoying the many pets he had throughout his life. He is most remembered for always having a big smile and boisterous laugh, his love for good food, and sharing his wisdom, which his family affectionately called "Cho-isms". His proudest accomplishment was his love for his six grandchildren and being their "Papa Cho".
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara; his 3 sons Darrell (Danielle) Cho, Dr. Aaron (Stacey) Cho, and Dr. Brandon (Karen) Cho. His grandchildren Emily (University of Michigan '21), Riley, Amelia (University of California - Davis '23), Ethan, Sam, and Ian, and his grand dog Doku, his sisters Yun ja (Dr. Jin soo) Park and Yun soon (Choong sun) Choi.
A celebration of life will be held on March 30, 2019 at 10:30 am at Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum, 4470 Hilltop Dr, San Diego, CA 92102. A luncheon will follow at a location tbd.
In lieu of flowers, please dedicate a mass in Lou's name at the church of your convenience or San Rafael Church, 17252 Bernardo Center Dr, San Diego, CA 92128, (858) 487-4314
