Obituary

James Michael Penta, age 72, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024, in Menifee, CA after a year-long series of strokes. Jim was a loving husband, a caring dad, and a fun grandpa. People were drawn to him because he was calm, patient, and a good listener. He had an unwavering faith in God throughout his entire life.

He is survived by his wife Patty; their daughter Jessica and son Chris (Mandie); their grandchildren Tegan, Asher, and Archer; and his brother Jeff (Kim). Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Vinnie.

Jim's early years in New York were filled with rich Italian traditions and weekly Sunday dinners with the extended family. He taught himself to play the guitar in his teens and joined a folk group at the church. Thus began 50+ years of inspiring others with his Christian music.

The family moved to San Diego when Jim's dad received a job transfer. Jim met Patty, his wife of 49 years, in a folk group at St. Therese Parish. They were married in 1975 by Patty's brother, Father Alan, and played music together for over 20 years. Jim earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in business administration.

In 1980 Jim began a 30-year career in Colorado as a subcontract manager in the aerospace industry. His most interesting project was co-producing the Russian RD-180 engine in the US for the Atlas launch vehicles. He retired early (on his 58th birthday) to have more time for items on his "Epic Adventure List".

Jim played bass guitar in rock bands and loved the energy of the crowds. He traveled to over 45 countries to experience the cultures of the world. Jim created family portraits with Patty at their photography studio for 20 years. He apprenticed at a culinary school, became a chef, and specialized in desserts (probably because of his sweet tooth). Jim graduated from the Catholic Biblical School and read scripture in the Holy Land.

In 2018 the couple moved back to California to be near the grandkids. He became a regional financial comptroller for the 4th degree Knights of Columbus and took pride in his organized records.

The Funeral will be held at St Therese Parish, 6400 Saint Therese Way, San Diego, CA 92120 on May 14 at 11:00. Reception following. Jim wanted guests to wear colorful outfits and bring stories to share.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Jim's favorite charities: the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
