Obituary

John James Tyson (1945–2026) was a longtime resident of Poway. He grew up in the bay area and graduated from San Leandro High School. John served in the U.S. Marines, where he trained in radio and electronics. That experience shaped a career that spanned more than fifty years as an electrical contractor. It also sparked a lifelong passion for amateur (HAM) radio.

After leaving the Marines, John settled in San Diego and met Peggy Bennett, who would become his wife. They married on July 19, 1969. During their honeymoon, they shared the historic moment watching the first men land on the moon.

In 1971, John and Peggy moved to Poway with their newborn daughter, Michelle. Their son, John Willam, was born the following year. John was deeply involved in his children’s lives, contributing his time and talents as a Boy Scout leader, ice hockey coach, stage lighting, set design, and videographer.

John loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping, snow skiing, and playing ice hockey. He was a dedicated fan of the San Diego Padres, followed politics closely, and never missed a good Western. A devoted HAM radio operator, John stayed active in the local radio community, including the Poway Amateur Radio Society (PARS). He played a leading role in organizing the 2025 Field Day at Lake Poway.

John is survived by his wife, Peggy; his son John, daughter, Michelle, son-in-law, Jason and daughter-in-law, Shannon; his loyal companion, “Buddy”; and his five grandchildren; Lauren, Seth, Cameron, Chase, and Solay, all of whom he adored.

John was a guy’s guy, a throwback to a different era. He was very handy and had an ability to troubleshoot, a true “MacGyver” with a gift of gab to boot. He will be missed. John’s farewell will be held Monday, May 4th at 11:30 a.m. at Miramar National Cemetery. Donations in his name can be made to the San Diego County Amateur Radio Council, Inc. (SANDARC) or the Helen Woodward Animal Center
