"Ike" Ickler
August 3, 1922 – October 22, 2024
Ike was born August 3, 1922, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He passed away October 22, 2024, in Escondido, California. Ike lived to be 102 years old. His lifelong faith in God gave him direction and comfort.
Ike, an only child, grew up in and around Minneapolis. He was surrounded by many relatives, and with both his parents working, they had a tremendous influence on him. One introduced him to church, where he was baptized at twelve years old. Another introduced him to boxing, and he developed into the Minneapolis Amateur Champion and lettered through college. There were many hunting, fishing and canoe trips growing up.
School seemed to come easy for Ike. After high school, he entered the University of Minnesota. He joined the ROTC and was called to active duty in early 1943. Ike was given the opportunity to compete for an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was successful and graduated from West Point in 1947.
Shortly after graduation, Ike was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Germany. Here, Ike met Mary Simmons. Mary was in Germany as a guest of her father, a U.S. Army Major serving as the area Provost Marshall.
After a short courtship Ike and Mary were married. It was a beautiful military ceremony in an ancient church built in 1100 AD.
For the next eighteen years Ike was stationed nine different places. His assignments varied from Germany to Korea, Fort Benning, to Purdue University (for an advanced degree), back to West Point as a faculty member, to the office of the Secretary of Defense.
During this time Nancy, John and Kurt were born. Every duty station meant new friends and new adventures. Ike and Mary had many, many close friends.
Ike retired from the military with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1967 and moved his family to Poway, California. He combined his military background and experiences with his education to work as a systems analyst doing operations research. Ike joined General Dynamics and worked as a team member or project manager for a diverse group of projects. These included aircraft, missile systems, navy ships, and even an integrated defense system for the oil industry in Saudi Arabia.
His "second career" life gave Ike the time to find enjoyment in horses and riding, snow skiing, tennis, sailing and fishing. Many of these activities included traveling and were done with good friends and family.
In 1979, Ike "retired" from General Dynamics and joined a very progressive company, Science Applications. Although the work was similar, his coworkers and their approach made this Ike's most enjoyable time in private industry. He retired in 1987.
Now fully retired, Ike turned his focus to "making a contribution to society". This effort was centered around the Rancho Bernardo Community Church, Presbyterian. He served on Session multiple times and was on several committees. He volunteered numerous hours at the North County Interfaith Council Crisis Center. At one point he taught computer skills to seniors. This was also a time of extended trips to see family and friends.
Mary passed away in 2008. Ike was devasted and turned to his faith for guidance. The church offered an organized grief group. Here, Ike met Barbara Borgerd. Barbara's husband had passed away a few years earlier. Ike and Barbara were married in 2010 and relocated to Escondido. They were both truly blessed to find comfort in each other in this new chapter of their lives.
Ike is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Nancy and husband Gary (Hamburg), son John and wife Connie, son Kurt and wife Lauri, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, as well as Barbara's daughter Wendy Borgerd, and Barbara's son David Borgerd and wife Troyce.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Foundation for Care Integration, Vista, CA, https://fcicaring.org , in honor of the wonderful care Ike received in the last few months of his life.
