Karen Adair (Sygrove) Osmak 66, of Pipe Creek, Texas entered the heavenly realm on July 22, 2026 in Escondido, California.

Karen Adair Osmak, daughter of Harold and Kathryn Sygrove, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 12, 1959. She graduated from Kentwood High School in 1978 and went on to attend Michigan State University on a full scholarship. Karen graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Languages. It was there she met the love of her life, Matthew Osmak. They dated for several years while he attended dental school and married on May 12, 1984 in Belmont, Michigan.

Karen went on to achieve Two Master’s degrees: the first a Masters in Business Administration with a speciality in Healthcare Administration from National University (1987) and later a second Masters in Homeland Security from San Diego State University. She accepted a commission in the United States Navy as a Lt. (j.g.) in 1987.

She was blessed with three wonderful children whom she adored. Gary (Pearo), Erin (Graham Hilts) and Brandon (Cynthia) were the jewels in her crown and she cherished every moment with them. She held her grandson, Arthur, for the first time just a few days before a brief and sudden illness took her.

Karen served in the United States Navy for 26 years both on active duty and the reserves, retiring after earning the rank of Commander. As a family, they traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia, both for duty and pleasure. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, she was recalled to active duty on a permanent basis due to her expertise in medical intelligence and disaster planning and response. In addition to her duties at the Pentagon and various overseas postings, she deployed to Afghanistan at a field hospital in the Green Zone.

Outside of work, Karen was a prolific gardener, published author, and avid crafter. She liked to sew, crochet, decorate her home, and create elaborate tablescapes. She was an excellent cook, always happy to try her hand at a new recipe. Traveling and sightseeing were her twin passions. She continued to traverse the world in retirement, crossing America from Maine to California and from Wyoming to Florida.

Karen Adair Osmak was full of life and joy. Her absence creates a profound void for those who loved her and she will be terribly missed. A private memorial service will be held for close friends and family at a future date, with full military honors. Memorial contributions to your local Feeding America chapter are suggested.

Karen is survived by her husband, her three children, one grandchild, and four older brothers: Scott (Marilyn) Sygrove of Arizona, James (Cindy) Sygrove of Connecticut, Martin Sygrove of Florida, and Brad (Debbie) Sygrove of Michigan.
