Kathleen Mary
Frederick
May 26, 1949 – August 27, 2022
On Saturday, August 27, 2022, Kathleen Mary (Guarino) Frederick, loving wife, mother of two, and grandmother of four, passed away at age seventy-three with her family by her side. Born and raised in Madison, Indiana, Kathy maintained close connections with her family and friends in her beloved hometown throughout her lifetime.
Kathy earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Indiana University and spent thirty-eight years as a registered nurse, including 25 years in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital in San Diego. This was fitting since she was such a kind, loving, and competent person. Anyone who ever met her, would quickly make her the first choice to care for a tiny infant and comfort the frightened parents.
Kathy met husband Steve Frederick on a camping trip to the Rocky Mountains in (1973). They were very happily married for 44 years and lived in Akron, OH, Denver, CO, and San Diego, CA, which was her home for the last 33 years. Not surprisingly, Kathy made lifelong friends everywhere she lived. Some of her best friends were made in the first grade in Madison.
Kathy loved spending time with her four grandchildren, Oliver, Natalie, Owen, and Julia. She enjoyed making cross-stitch and crochet projects for them and was frequently seen coloring with them.
She is survived by her husband, Steve; her children and in-laws, Megan (Frederick) and Tim Wizorek; Jenny (Frederick) and Peter Magee; her grandchildren, Oliver and Owen Wizorek and Natalie and Julia Magee; and her brothers Gary, John, Andrew and Thomas (deceased) Guarino of Madison, Indiana.
Kathy battled Parkinson's Disease for 16 years. She closely followed the latest research and participated in research studies and fundraising efforts. She benefitted from many programs designed to improve quality of life for Parkinson's patients including boxing, dance, music, speech, and physical therapy. In honor of her fight, Kathy's family welcomes donations to The Summit for Stem Cell Research, https://www.summitforstemcell.org/ or The Michael J. Fox Foundation https://www.michaeljfox.org/
