Kurt Erwin
Zublin
March 27, 1923 – May 8, 2020
Kurt Erwin Zublin, of San Diego, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020, at the age of 97. Kurt died peacefully with his beloved wife, Anita and their children and grandchildren by his side.
Kurt was born in Southern Germany on March 27, 1923, and at a young age, moved with his family to Switzerland, where his parents owned and managed a hotel resort on Lake Constance. Here, Kurt lived during his childhood and later completed his education, receiving a diploma from ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Electrical Engineering. His engineering career brought him to the United States, first to Syracuse, New York where he worked for General Electric, and later to Palo Alto, California where he worked at Watkins-Johnson. It was in Palo Alto that Kurt met his wife, Anita, also from Switzerland. In 1959, they were married in Switzerland. They would spend the next 21 years raising a family of five children in the Bay Area. A job transfer in 1980 prompted the family's move to San Diego where Kurt enjoyed a fulfilling career with Wavetek until his retirement at age 70. Kurt offered his consulting services to a business associate and later volunteered his time working with seniors on tax preparation. Beginning in 2001, Kurt and Anita were blessed with five grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Kurt was able to experience his wish to see his first grandchild graduate from high school in 2019.
One of Kurt's life passions was his love for gardening and nature. He devoted many hours tending to his vegetable gardens, fruit trees and bee hives. This gave him great joy and a sense of peace. Over the years, Kurt and his family spent many summers vacationing in Switzerland. Kurt strongly believed in family connections and the importance of staying in touch, which he passed on to his children. He enjoyed any occasion for a family celebration including birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. Kurt also enjoyed travelling with Anita to different countries in Europe and destinations within the U.S. Kurt's curiousity and zest for learning never waned. He was enthusiastic about financial, environmental, and health research, and embraced technology, acquiring his first I-Pad at the age of 90!
Kurt was a loving, kind, patient and generous husband, father and grandfather. His positive attitude was an inspiration to his family and friends. He carried the smile of a happy man and his loving spirit will remain deep in our hearts always.
Kurt was preceded in death by his father, Julius, his mother Margot, his brother Peter and his sister Dorette. He is survived by his wife, Anita, his five children, Beatrice, Dorita (John), Margot (Ritt), Dominic (Anja), and Bryan (Ming), his five grandchildren, Cassidy, Emil, Teo, Bryan and Finn, his sister, Katharina, his cousin Heinrich and extended family in Switzerland and the United States.
Psalm 73:26 (NIV) "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in memory of Kurt to the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults – website - www.actionfund.org
