Obituary

Fr. Larry F. Briske, Retired Navy Chaplain and Associate Pastor

At St. Michael's Church in Poway, CA

Fr. Larry was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on Nov. 13, 1931.  He graduated from West Division High School and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.  After three years of service as a Gunners Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard, Fr. Larry entered St. Lawrence Minor Seminary in Fondulac, Wisconsin, and then St. Francis Major Seminary in Milwaukee.  He was ordained on May 30, 1964.

His first and only assignment in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee was at St. Joseph's Church in Racine, Wisconsin, where he spent 4 years before entering the Navy as a Lieutenant JG chaplain in 1968. During his 27 year Navy career, Fr. Served on two ships: the USS Wasp (CVS-18) and the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) as Command Chaplain, Amphibious Squadron One.  Fr. Larry saw duty overseas on Midway Island, Guam and Sasebo, Japan, as well as in the U.S. at Norfolk, VA; Pt. Mugu, CA; Newport, RI; Lemoore, CA; Brunswick, ME; and tours as Marine Chaplain in Yuma, AZ and El Toro, CA.  He was promoted to the rank of Captain on September 1, 1985 and retired from the Navy on August 1, 1991.  He was the recipient of various medals, including the Navy Achievement Medal with one star, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal.

Father will lie in state at St. Michael's Church in Poway, CA  from 10-11am, Wednesday June 22, 2022 followed by mass at 11am.  He will be transferred to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for interment at St. Matthias Cemetery in Milwaukee.
