Obituary

Larry Stewart Guthrie, born August 30, 1949, in Garden City, KS went to be with our Lord on Friday, March 3, 2023.  Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Stewart Guthrie and Joyce Georgeann Guthrie.  He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Diane Linnebur Guthrie, and his three daughters: Heather (Vincent Valle) of San Diego, Jennifer (Jonathan LeDuc) of Birmingham, AL, and Stephanie (Aaron Dell) of Walnut Creek, CA.

His pride and joy were his eight grandchildren, Olivia Ray Valle, Joaquin Jaxson Valle, Selah Grace LeDuc, Ansley Joy LeDuc, Adelyne Praise LeDuc, Jedediah Guthrie LeDuc, Avery Elizabeth Dell and Miller MacLachlan Dell.  He is also survived by his uncle, Ray Guthrie (Palm Desert), sisters, Charlotte Guthrie (Texas), Sharon McLeskey (John) (Kansas), brother, Archie Guthrie (Karen) (Kansas), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Larry was raised in Kansas and met the love of his life, Diane Linnebur, shortly after high school and a stint in the National Guard. Always up for an adventure, they met on a blind date set up by friends and quickly fell in love and started a family. Their three daughters came within the first eight years of marriage and Larry threw himself into being a present father and provider.

Larry started his career as an installer in the cable television industry. In 1979, they moved to San Diego, and he continued working his way up in the industry for the next 30 years. He had a work ethic like no one else and loved his job because of the people with whom he worked. Ever the prankster, if there was a boundary, Larry would push it and his agenda was to keep everyone at the office laughing. He had a knack for talking his way out of any circumstance and he never met a stranger.

He loved sports, spending many years playing among friends in a men's softball league in Rancho Bernardo. He was also active in the San Diego soccer community, having been a referee for more than 30 years. One of his proudest moments was earning his national referee badge. After retirement, he devoted much of his time to his golf game and you could find him at the course three to four times a week.

Playing sports was a consistent theme in his life, but his true passion was being with his family. As the girls grew, he was never one to miss a school or athletic event. He was known to drive all over the state for their games. As the girls got married and started having families of their own, Larry became "Papa." He cherished his time with his eight grandchildren and enjoyed cheering for them at their sports, passing on his love for the Padres and the outdoors, giving rides in his corvette, and finding any excuse to have fun.

Larry has been a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church for 44 years. He was honored to serve the Lord as a Eucharistic Minister and lived his life according to his faith.
