Obituary

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of Lorrence Ray Fiscus on December 1, 2022. He was born July 23, 1940 and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather known as Papa. He was a proud, retired Air Force man who served his country for most of his life, reaching the highest rank of enlisted personnel, Chief Master Sergeant. The majority of his decorated military career was spent at Pope Air Force Base/Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and he was a veteran of the Vietnam War. The men who served with him as members of the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) and the 82 nd Airborne respected his leadership and mentorship and he is the standard by which many of them measured all their other Chiefs. While serving in the military, he obtained a BA in sociology from Methodist University in North Carolina.

The early years of his retirement were spent in Columbus, Ohio, where he enjoyed softball, card games, running with friends, and time in Cincinnati with his wife, Barbara, and her family. He and Barbara moved to Temecula, California in 1999, where he reveled in being a grandfather to his granddaughters, Valerie and Vanessa. They always put a smile on his face and love in his heart. He rarely missed a softball or soccer game and was well known as Papa Larry around the fields. He enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them and his daughter, Kimberly, their mother. Frequently, he and Barbara travelled to Washington State to spend time with his daughter Shelly, her partner Jamie, and their grand-dog, Abby. While there he enjoyed seeing sights around Washington, playing cribbage and Sequence, and fishing for trout.

In addition to being a husband, father, grandfather, and military man, he was also a great friend, mentor, neighbor, a loving brother and uncle, and someone who could always put a smile on your face, laughter in your life, and love in your heart. He will be remembered and missed by many. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Elbert G. Fiscus Sr. and his mother, Emmadell C. Thompson. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Barbara, his daughter Shelly Bosserman (mother Pamela Gladney) and her partner Jamie Thompson, his daughter Kimberly Juntunen and her partner Glen Freter, his granddaughters Valerie and Vanessa Juntunen, and their father Garet Juntunen. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, Michael Fiscus (Patsy), Elbert Fiscus Jr. (Ramona), Keely Viers-Hill (Jim), many nephews, nieces, and other extended family members.

As Nelson Mandela said, "Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace."

We invite you to honor him on December 19, 2022 at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego at 1230PST.  Reception to follow, location provided at service. Please plan to arrive at the cemetery at 1210PST. https://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/miramar.asp
