Margaret Kamensky
September 26, 1931 - August 31, 2022
Margaret Kamensky (née Rohal), age 90, passed away in her sleep the morning of August 31, 2022 in Escondido, CA.
Her parents, Peter and Mary (Choma) Rohal, immigrated from Slovakia to the United States via Ellis Island in the early years of World War I. The youngest of nine children, she was the last to pass away. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Peter, William, and John Rohal; sisters Kathryn Rohal, Mary Reardon, Irene Kerr, Anna Rubish, and Helen McCune.
She is survived by her sons, John Michael Kamensky (Jeanne) and Robert Joseph Kamensky (Susan); daughters, Mary Elizabeth McKeachie (Stuart), Ann Marie Kamensky, and Kathryn Teresa Smith (Paul); six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
She was born in Port Homer, OH, and raised in Weirton, WV, graduating from Follensbee High School in 1949. She married John Thomas Kamensky in 1951. His career as an enlisted Airman meant they would move frequently as they raised a family over the next 30 years, mainly between Germany, Texas, and Austria. Everywhere they went, Margaret was determined to learn new things, meet new people, and take on new adventures. She befriended artists and restauranteurs in Germany and Austria, learned German and how to oil paint, and attended opera in Bayreuth and Vienna.
They retired from military life in 1981, settling in Georgetown, TX. They divorced in 1990 and Margaret moved to San Diego where she became a doting grandmother to her son Robert's children. She also enjoyed travel adventures to Germany, Austria, the Holy Land, and Hong Kong. She ushered for the San Diego Symphony and volunteered at San Rafael Roman Catholic Church in the Rancho Bernardo community.
She spent her last years in various retirement communities in Escondido, reading books and talking with her children living around the country via FaceTime and phone. In a final family gathering to celebrate her 90th birthday, she enjoyed herself immensely.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Poway-Bernardo Mortuary, 13243 Poway Road, Poway, CA on Monday, September 19, at 9:30 a.m. for a viewing and memorial service. In keeping with her flair for drama and adventure, she asked that her cremated remains be scattered at sunset into the sea by her children to the strains of Strauss Viennese waltzes.
