Obituary

Margaret (Marg) Keeney passed away on March 5, 2023 at home surrounded by family.  Born in Buffalo, New York in 1935 – the fourth of John and Gertrude Gallagher's eight children – Marg graduated from Mount Mercy Academy and Buffalo State Teachers College.  Early in her career, Marg secured an elementary school teaching assignment at the US Army Base in Schweinfurt, Germany.  This opportunity combined Marg's commitment to service with her sense of adventure. Marg traveled to numerous cities across Europe and the Middle East during her two years abroad.  Upon returning stateside, Marg married Navy officer David Keeney and together they raised their three children in Japan, Puerto Rico and San Diego.

Marg had a special gift for creating a large community of family and friends.  Everyone was welcomed in her home, invited on her travels, and encouraged to join her at the beach - her favorite place. She was quick to organize the fun and celebrate everyone's major life milestones.  Marg was generous with her time teaching special needs children to swim, volunteering at Mt. Carmel High School, as well as teaching Catechism classes at San Rafael Parish.  She was diligent about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and participated in Masters swimming competitions and 10k runs.  In her later years, Marg was a regular at the gym and joined friends for early morning walks.

Marg lived life to the absolute fullest.  She was engaging, joyful and quick to offer advice – whether you asked for it or not.  Guided by her Faith she lived the true Christian values of compassion and understanding for others.  She was blessed with a loving family and grateful for each of her six grandchildren.  Marg was preceded in death by son Jerry, and survived by her husband of 60 years David, daughter Anne (Daniel), son Brendan (Carey), daughter-in-law Kristian, sisters Elizabeth and Suzanne Gallagher, and six grandchildren Noah, Henry, Aerin, Tate, Liam, and Sean.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on April 21, 2023 at San Rafael Catholic Church in Rancho Bernardo.
