Obituary

Dr. Marianne Tahl passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, in San Diego, California. She was 91 years old. Marianne was born on August 16, 1934, in Rotterdam, Holland, to Edward and Jacouba (née Kehlenbrink) Overman.

She spent her childhood in the Netherlands during the hardships of World War II, an experience that helped shape her resilience and determination.

Marianne ventured to America at the age of eighteen to attend college. An exceptional student, she graduated at the top of her high school class and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to attend Illinois College. After earning her degree, she returned to the Netherlands to pursue her medical education at the University of Leiden. She later came back to the United States, where she built a distinguished medical career spanning more than 50 years.

Dr. Tahl was a deeply compassionate and dedicated physician who treated her patients as if they were family. Over the course of her practice, she had the rare privilege of caring for multiple generations within the same families. Known for her humility and selflessness, she gave generously of her time, knowledge, and energy. Her strength and commitment to excellence inspired and mentored many who followed her into the field of medicine, and she served as a pioneer and role model for women in professional careers.

Beyond her work in medicine, Marianne was a devoted advocate for animals and an active supporter of the Humane Society. She lovingly cared for many dogs, cats, and birds throughout her life. She found great joy and peace in nature, especially while hiking, and was a member of the Sierra Club, contributing to environmental education and conservation efforts. Through her involvement in Wilderness Medicine initiatives, she collaborated with physicians to provide clinical care in remote and extreme environments.

Marianne is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Renu Tahl of Morristown, New Jersey, and Tony and Cindy Tahl of Rancho Santa Fe, California; her brother, Dr. John Overman of Temecula, California; and her three grandchildren, Madeleine, Avi, and Maya. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Henry Tahl, in 2004.

She will be remembered for her compassion, integrity, and unwavering dedication to the care of others.
