Michael J. Borer, a longtime resident of San Diego, California, passed away on April 22, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Mike spent his early years with his parents and four siblings, living in several Midwestern cities. In Springfield, Illinois, he met the love of his life, Judy Nieman, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.
Mike earned his undergraduate degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, before going on to receive his medical degree in 1965, beginning a life committed to caring for others.
Early in his medical career, Mike served as a captain in the United States Air Force at Castle Air Force Base. Following his service, Mike moved his family to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he completed his residency in Ophthalmology.
In 1972, Mike and his family settled in San Diego, where he founded the La Mesa Eye Clinic. Over a career spanning more than 25 years, he became a respected and dedicated physician and intraocular surgeon in the community.
Mike will be remembered for his deep love of family, his youthful spirit, and his sense of humor—especially his signature “dad jokes.” He found great joy in time spent near the beach, particularly in Fort Myers and Maui, and in hosting the beloved “Borer Beach Bash,” in Mission Beach, bringing family and friends together year after year. His playful spirit and memorable antics with his grandchildren will be cherished always.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; his four children, Margie (Ken) Jones, Joe (Laura) Borer, Matt (Ann Marie) Borer, and Jenna (Jim) Ellis; his eleven grandchildren; his brother, Patrick (Marla) Borer, and many nieces and nephews
