Obituary

Peter N. Pavlics was born in Detroit, MI on April 18, 1960 to Ferenc and Klára (Schwáb) Pavlics. He died peacefully at home with family on June 25, 2022. It was fitting that his last breath was during the bottom of the ninth inning of a Padres game (when asked if he was a fan, his favorite reply was, "unfortunately").

Peter earned a bachelor's degree in Engineering from UC Berkeley, initially following in the footsteps of his father. A few years later, he forged his own path and pursued a career in business. He went on to earn an MBA from Harvard (or, that school in Cambridge), and had a long and rewarding career at SAIC before retiring at the age of 52. More importantly, Peter was a loving father, husband, and son; as well as an avid golfer, traveler, music trivia know-it-all, gardener, crossword puzzler, and experimental home cook. However the role he loved most was that of grandpa, and in his final years he enjoyed playing with his granddaughter Frankie (Frances) and holding his grandson Harlan.

Those who knew Peter described him as intelligent, patient, kind, and humble, with a wry sense of humor. He was thoughtful and generous with his time, loved debate and challenging discourse, and encouraged curiosity in everything. He was analytical in nature and coached and mentored people to be the best versions of themselves. Above all else, he believed in the importance of prioritizing happiness and balance in life.

Peter had a deep love of art, theater and music, and never turned down an opportunity to see Blue Öyster Cult. He also had a passion for golfing, frequenting the beautiful Torrey Pines course. Peter took advantage of his early retirement to travel the world, including some of his favorite places: visiting family in Hungary and Austria, snorkeling at Black Rock Beach in Maui, and seeing a game at nearly every ballpark in the US. In his final weeks, he urged us to get out there and live, experience new things, visit the places he'd planned on but didn't make it to, and beyond.

Peter was predeceased by his mother, and his older brother Frank. He leaves behind his father; his wife Nancy; his sons Mark (Collene) and Eric (Gabriela); his daughter Victoria (Brent); his two grandchildren; his sister-in-law Tammy; and countless extended family and friends. No formal service will be held, but Peter requested that those who knew him enjoy a beautiful sunset and toast their favorite beverage in his honor. And he'd want you to remember: "seasons don't fear the reaper, nor do the wind, the sun or the rain."
