Philip Marion
Moody
January 3, 1933 – October 17, 2024
Philip Marion Moody passed away peacefully in San Diego, California on October 17, 2024 after 91 years of a life well lived. Phil loved life, lived it to the fullest, and always faced it with a sense of humor. All who knew him were recipients of his generous and fun-loving spirit. The consummate gentleman, he was spontaneously friendly and engaging with anyone and everyone he encountered in life. Always strikingly handsome, he remained so at 91.
Phil was born January 3, 1933 in Aiken, South Carolina where he also grew up. While in high school, Phil lettered in track, football and basketball; graduated Cumme Laude; and was in the high school band where, while mastering the saxophone, he realized his lifelong love of music. He also excelled at tennis which he played throughout most of his life. Following high school, Phil completed his freshman year at University of South Carolina; and then enlisted in the Navy so he could cover his own college expenses. He served one year and then reenrolled in University of South Carolina where he held many leadership positions in various organizations, including ROTC. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and then reentered the Navy as an officer, serving his country for another four years and aspiring to become a Navy pilot.
Phil ended his Navy career when he was recruited by General Electric with an offer he could not refuse. That launched his very successful career as a systems engineer, followed by a succession of recruitments by Computer Sciences Corporation, Boeing, Talaris and, lastly, the US Department of Education from which he retired. In the private sector, his positions as a computer systems international sales manager took him all over the world which further enhanced his love for travel. After retirement, Phil served on the board of the San Diego Jazz Party for many years, by which he discovered and engaged many musicians to perform at their annual jazz party, many of whom also became close friends.
It was always a delightful experience spending time with Phil. He was funny, fun-loving, a dedicated sports fan, a history aficionado; and he always enjoyed entertaining and challenging his friends. Any friend of Phil's was a friend for life and their loyalty was mutual. Phil loved his country and believed he grew up in the best of all times. His life passions were international travel, music and anything University of South Carolina, especially watching his undefeated lady Gamecocks play basketball.
Phil is survived by his daughter Catherine Davidge, his son David Moody (Bridget), his four grandchildren Hannah, Lilliana, Olivia and Ethan and his great grandson Jackson. He is also survived by his nephews David Ramsey and Jim Ratliff; his nieces Chollet Ramsey and Beth Ratliff Cohen; and many great nephews and nieces. Phil is now resting in peace with his father Herbert Moody, his beloved mother Wilhelmina Moody, and his two sisters Margaret Ramsey and Betty Anne Ratliff.
Phil will be lovingly remembered by all who were blessed to have shared his life's journey with him. If he touched your life with his generosity and kindness, we ask that you pay it forward; and when you do, quietly say to yourself: "This is for you, Phil".
Per his request, no services are currently planned but he would be honored by your donation to any charity of your choice. He would also encourage contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, or Salvation Army, all of which he supported for many years.
