Robert Kenneth
Deremer
October 19, 1935 – January 17, 2025
With heavy hearts, we share that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, colleague and friend – Robert Kenneth Deremer ("Ken") - has passed away following a brief stay in the hospital. Ken was 89 years old at the time of his passing.
Ken was born in Glassport, Pennsylvania during the depths of the Great Depression. He represents the purest definition of a "self-made" man, growing up with very limited means, taking on the responsibility for the care of his family at an early age. Through his relentless work ethic and determination, Ken worked full-time jobs beginning in high school. He worked his way through college to pay for his education, earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon. He went on to pursue two post-graduate degrees culminating in earning a PHD in nuclear engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Ken began his nuclear engineering career working for Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in Pittsburgh. In addition to working to take care of his family and pay for his education, Ken served in Glassport's volunteer fire department, which had always been one of his passions.
In 1961, Ken married the love of his life and soul mate – Annette Tudek – where they remained married for 63 years until his death. Ken and Annette went on to have two children: Susie in 1962 and Ken in 1965. In 1972, Ken accepted a job in San Diego, Ca and moved his family to the community of Rancho Bernardo (RB), where Ken and Annette resided for 53 years. Ken and Annette were active in the RB community, with Ken serving as a volunteer coach in multiple youth sports leagues, while Annette worked at the RB Westwood club for many years.
Ken worked in the nuclear engineering field for 45 years. In addition to Bettis, Ken worked for General Atomic in San Diego for several years, as well as multiple engineering consulting firms in Southern California, where he was frequently sought for his deep expertise in the safety risk analysis of nuclear power plants. Ken was well respected throughout his career by his colleagues across the country, for his intelligence, expertise, work ethic and integrity.
Despite his long and successful career, Ken will best be known by those closest to him as a loving, caring and selfless man. As a husband, Ephesians 5:25 tells us "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her." Ken was devoted to that calling every day of his married life to Annette, serving as an example to all married men to follow. As a father, he was committed to providing for all the needs of his two children (Susie and Ken) while continuously bestowing the wisdom, guidance and opportunity upon them to become the best people they could be. He remained active in the lives of his two grandchildren (Andrew and Ally), attending all their sports and activities with the same level of passion as he did with his children. He was always there for his family, often putting his personal interests aside to make sure all was taken care of with the rest of the family. As for personal interests, Ken had a passion for basketball from which he played from his youth until well into his 60's.
Ken is survived by his wife Annette, son Ken, daughter-in law Lanny, son-in-law Jesus Ramirez, and grandchildren Andrew and Ally. His passing from this world reunites him with his departed mother Helen and daughter Susie, who passed away on October 19, 2023.
While we mourn Ken's loss, we are comforted and encouraged that in the hour of his death, he encountered our savior Jesus Christ, and experienced God's grace for eternal salvation in heaven.
