Obituary

Robert J. Fierro, Ph.D. 1-31-33 1-13-19

On Sunday, January 13, 2019, our beloved Dad and Tata was peacefully called home

to be with the Lord. He was at his home surrounded with love by his beautiful wife,

Armida, and his 7 children. Dad was born and raised in Florence, Kansas. He attended

St. Patrick's Catholic School where he was also an altar server at the Church. Upon his

high school graduation, he enlisted with his cousin, Don Diaz, in the U.S. Air Force

during the Korean War and was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador in Iceland. "So much

for getting away from the snow", he would say. (Dad, we will miss your witty humor.)

After his discharge in 1955, Dad attended Fresno City College to begin his pursuit of

higher education and this is where he met our mom. They were married in Holy

Matrimony on August 10, 1958 in Fresno, Calif. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic

Church. Shortly after, they moved to San Diego where they would call home for the next

60 years. Dad attended and graduated from San Diego State University in 1965 with his

Bachelor's degree. That same year, he started his career with the State of California as

a Rehabilitation Counselor. He later became a Rehabilitation Consultant for the counties

of San Diego and Imperial. While working full-time for the State, and growing his family

(5 children by then), he also continued to pursue his education. He went on to receive

his Masters and Ph.D. in Psychology. Dad retired from the State after 33 years. Upon

retiring from the State, he worked as a clinical psychologist in private practice up until

  1. He loved his profession and this was evident in his gentle and compassionate

character. Our dad enjoyed sports especially the Chargers (SD or LA), Padres, SDSU

Aztecs and the Kansas U Jayhawks basketball team. He loved to travel and would take

every opportunity to do so. He was a loving and devoted family man. Our Dad loved to

have family get-togethers and play pool and horseshoes. He enjoyed listening to

Mariachi music. Dad was a great dancer and has even won a couple of dance contests.

We loved to watch Mom and Dad dance together. His love for God and his Catholic faith

were a big part of his life. He was a true gentleman. Enjoy the journey, Dad.

We were truly blessed to have such a wonderful man in our lives we called Dad.

He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Aurora (Lola) and Natividad,

stepmom, Irene and his sister Fay.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Armida Fierro (née Nunez), his seven

children: Bobby (Carol), Suzy (Tom), Michelle (Mike), Debbie (Luis), Valerie, Chris

(Tricia), Traci (Jimmy), 23 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, his brothers Pat, Nat,

David, Angelo, Steven, his sisters Margo and Patricia, and many nieces and nephews.
