Robert Dennis
Morgan
October 1, 1936 – August 17, 2024
Robert Dennis Morgan passed away at home on August 17, 2024 at the age of 87, after a long and bravely fought battle with Parkinson's Disease. Residing for many decades in Rancho Bernardo and Poway, Robert was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1936 to Rich and Dorothy Morgan. Having survived polio as a child, Robert was sent to live on his grandparent's farm during World War II, when his Dad was serving overseas in the Navy, establishing early-on the character of a steadfast and resilient man. Setting his sights in the sky, Robert worked at the local Des Moines hardware store as a teenager, in order pay for flying lessons and a pilot license—a decision that would predict his enlisting in the Air National Guard midway through college at Drake University. Robert married his high school sweetheart, Susan, and the two enjoyed 53 years of marriage before her passing in 2014. Robert's National Guard career as a jet pilot took him along with his family to Puerto Rico and Denver, before he transitioned to the Air Force. The family also lived in Connecticut before moving to California, specifically Fallbrook and then eventually settling in Poway. After his military career, Robert became a commercial airline pilot for various carriers and ultimately enjoyed a very long career with American Airlines, serving as Captain for a total of 36 years, flying out of both San Diego and Los Angeles. Robert and Susan together raised six daughters and one son, with whom he shared his great love of travel, horticulture, Western art, photography, and the great value of a witty pun. He will be remembered for his kindness, humble nature, intelligence, and dedication to his family. Robert is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Susan Morgan, his daughter Leanne Morgan, and his grandson, Patrick Flournoy. He is lovingly survived by his children: Cristi Flournoy of Vista, Robert (Miyako) Morgan, Jr. of Hillsboro, Oregon, Michelle Morgan of Rancho Bernardo, Nicole (Lars) Anderson of Seattle, Washington, Amanda Morgan (Keith) Palmer of Los Angeles, and Sarah Morgan of Encinitas. Bringing him much happiness were his ten grandchildren: David Gordon, Ben Morgan, Josh Flournoy, Elizabeth Flournoy, Samantha Schrum, Cristin Yeisley, Susan Sanae Morgan, Morgan Anderson, Griffin Palmer and Matilda Palmer. Additionally, he delighted in his four great- grandchildren: Zachary Flournoy, Ayden Yeisley, Amber Long, and Madelyn Morgan. We honor Robert's service not only to his country, but to his family and he will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
