Robert Wright
Scoggin

Robert (Bob) Wright Scoggin (92) was born on October 23, 1932, in Atlanta, GA to William and Vada Scoggin. He was the youngest of five children (William, Doris, Marie, Daniel...all deceased). Robert grew up in Raleigh, NC. In 1949, after graduating from Broughton High School he enlisted in the US Naval Reserve as a dental technician. He attended Wake Forest University until he was called to active duty in the Navy in 1951 during the Korean War. He served at US Naval Training Center Bainbridge, MD until his honorable discharge in 1953.
Robert married Della (Delores) Dovre Scoggin in Raleigh on February 12, 1955. They had three sons: Robert, Jr., Steven, and Cifford (deceased). Robert was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company from 1954 to 1982, rising to district manager through roles in Shelby, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Raleigh. Robert also served as President of the Shelby and Raleigh Chambers of Commerce and chaired Junior Achievement of Winston-Salem. After retiring, he worked on two projects for the Governor of North Carolina: Assistant Director of the North Carolina Science and Mathematics Alliance and Director of External Affairs for the Superconducting Super Collider Project. During their leisure time, Robert and Delores traveled to Europe and Russia. Robert also enjoyed playing tennis and golf, cycling and following sports teams.
Robert fully retired and moved with Delores to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 1992 to assist with care for Dolores's elderly parents. Together they continued to enjoy traveling and visiting family in Alaska, Hawaii, San Diego and throughout the southeastern United States. They especially enjoyed the time they spent with their grandchildren (Dustin, David, Rebecca, Molly, and Katie) and their spouses. Robert was also especially fond of his nephews (Bruce, Bill, and Doug) and nieces (Peggy, Pat, Judy, and JoAnn) and their spouses. Delores passed to eternal life on January 28, 2017, after 62 years of marriage.
Robert relocated to San Diego, CA in 2018 to reside with son Steven and wife Connie and grandson David and wife Gemma. Over the course of seven years Robert enjoyed the affectionate company of four great-grandchildren (Rufina (5), Francisco (3), Enmmanuel (2) and Anthony (2 months) and keeping abreast of the activities of great-grandchildren Kensyn (12) and Denver (2) North Carolina.
Robert embraced the Catholic faith and received the Sacraments on July 7, 2024. He passed to eternal life peacefully on August 21, 2025, during the vigil of the Queenship of Mary, wearing the brown scapular. He is interred next to his wife Delores at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego, CA.
