Obituary

Robert Barneson Sloan, 69, of San Diego, California, passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2025. Known to many as "Bob," he was a devoted father, proud grandfather, loving son and brother, and loyal friend. He lived life with curiosity, adventure, and a deep passion for the world around him.

Bob was born in Denver, Colorado, and raised in Santa Barbara. He graduated from San Marcos High School before earning a Bachelors degree in Telecommunications and Film from San Diego State University. While at SDSU, Bob was a dedicated member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and remained actively involved with the fraternity throughout his life. He also received an honorary Master of Science in Photography from the Brooks Institute of Photographic Arts—a testament to his lifelong dedication to the visual arts.

Bob built a successful career in video production as the founder of Sloan Productions, where he wore many hats: owner, cameraman, director, producer, and editor. His work earned national recognition and acclaim, including three Emmy Awards and a host of Telly Awards. Over the years, Bob contributed to countless broadcasts, including Super Bowls for the NFL, programming for ESPN, Nickelodeon, Golf Channel, National Geographic, and many more. His passion for underwater videography was a defining thread in his creative life.

In retirement, Bob embraced every opportunity to pursue adventure. He traveled widely, rode dirt bikes through the desert with lifelong friends, mentored other professionals, volunteered with youth, and spent treasured time with his family. He cultivated new passions like glassblowing and continued to nurture his love behind the camera and scuba diving in exotic locations.

Bob is survived by his children, Jennifer Hetherington (Jordan), Kimberly Sloman (Justin), and Christine Toone (Paul), his beloved grandchildren: Kambree, Brooklyn, Danielle, Charlie, Ethan, Elliot, and his equally loved siblings, Cydney Gordon and Scott Sloan (Rebecca).

He will be remembered for his bold spirit, generous heart, boundless creativity, and killer margarita recipe.  A celebration of life will be held September 7, 2025. If you would like to be included, please send an email to bobsloancelebrationoflife@gmail.com for updates on the services.

Bob filled his days with laughter, meaning, and motion—and he inspired others to do the same.
