Victor Conaway lived his life with determination, humor, integrity, and an unmistakable competitive spirit. Whether facing a racecourse, building a business, helping another competitor, or confronting the challenges life placed before him, Victor carried with him an attitude that could be summed up simply: “Don’t tell me I can’t.” Finding a way to overcome obstacles was part of his nature, whether that meant shaving seconds off a race or fighting through significant health challenges.

Victor's love of competition was woven throughout his life. He was the owner of Vic's Competition Cycles in Mission Valley, where his passion extended beyond his own racing as he mentored and sponsored up-and- coming off-road racers. His own racing career took him to some of the most demanding events in the sport, including the Baja SCORE 500 and 1000, Parker 400, Mexicali 250, off-road trials in the United States and Europe, and the grueling two-day, 400-mile Tecate race, which he was invited to compete in and successfully finished. His accomplishments also earned him a place in the Guinness World Records in the 350cc class.

Competition remained a part of Victor's life long after many athletes would have stopped racing. Beginning in 2009, he qualified for and competed in the National Senior Games, racing the 5K and 10K road cycling events in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2019. His drive to continue competing reflected something much larger about Victor: he didn't allow age, adversity, or other people's expectations to define what he could accomplish.

Victor was also an entrepreneur and educator. In addition to Vic's Competition Cycles, he owned Ray Brock Auto in National City and served as a continuing education teacher. Throughout the different chapters of his life, he brought the same qualities to his work and relationships that defined him as a competitor: integrity, loyalty, perseverance, and a willingness to help others succeed.

Yet Victor's accomplishments tell only part of his story. What mattered most were the people with whom he shared his life. He loved his family and friends deeply. He was gracious and loyal, loved to laugh, and possessed a sense of humor that remained an important part of who he was. His friendships, the people he mentored, and the family who loved him form a legacy every bit as meaningful as the races he finished and records he earned.

Victor is survived by his loving wife, Trudi Conaway; his daughter and son-in-law, Lori and John Meyer; grandchildren John and Julie Meyer and Sarah and Quinton Dorgan; great-grandson Samuel Meyer; his son, Daniel Conaway; his daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Daniel George and Justine, Wyatt, Gage, Tommy, Stetson; and many wonderful friends.

Few words capture Victor's life more fittingly than those of 2 Timothy 4:7: “I fought the good fight; I finished the race; I kept the faith.”

For Victor, the race was never simply about reaching the finish line. It was about meeting the challenge, giving everything he had, and refusing to be told that something couldn't be done.
