Obituary

William Barry, better known to most as "Bill" or "Papa", passed away surrounded by family at the age of 90. A resident of San Diego for 66 years, his legacy will carry on in the many lives he touched with his unrelenting kindness, charm, and generosity.

Born to Joseph Barry Jr. and Helen M. Foley, he was the second oldest of four siblings. He grew up in Newton, MA, with his lifelong friends, Bob Kelley and Robert (Pete) Carney, as well as his grandparents M.F. Foley and Helen A. Foley of Brookline, MA.

He attended Warren Junior High and Newton High School before graduating from Kimball Union Academy. He attended Brown University, where he played tennis, became president of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and secretary of the class of '58. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy which brought him to Naval Intelligence school at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego. There, during an officer's ball, he met his future wife: Barbara Anne Smith.

Following a life-altering spinal injury while stationed in Oahu, Bill retired as a full lieutenant and returned to San Diego accepting a position with the Department of Defense as a computer programmer, working on naval aviation systems for such planes as the E2C Hawkeye.

Bill and Barb settled with their two daughters, Kathy and Monica, in Scripps Ranch, where he would remain until 2017 when he moved to a senior facility. Bill and Barb were steadfast in their Catholic faith: he was a Eucharistic Minister at Good Shepherd Parish and CCD teacher. They were involved parents at St. Didacus and the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, founding members of St. Gregory the Great church, and active choir participants until Barbara's passing in 2011. They also played the banjo and sang with the San Diego Banjo Band.

Although diagnosed with Parkinson's, he was still active in his retirement community, watching Padres games with his friend Connie and spending countless hours with his grandchildren, Kevin, Katryna, Victoria, Olivia and Samuel who all treasured their time with him. Bill is also survived by his sister Joan McCarthy and his brother Philip Barry, and preceded in death by his brother Joseph Barry III.
